Background of the Study
In recent years, augmented reality (AR) has emerged as a transformative technology in the cultural and tourism sectors. In Abuja, FCT, historical monuments represent not only architectural heritage but also rich narratives of national history. An AR-based historical monument guide integrates digital content with real-world landmarks, enabling visitors to experience a dynamic interpretation of historical events and cultural significance. This system overlays interactive information—such as virtual reconstructions, multimedia presentations, and contextual narratives—onto the physical environment using mobile devices or AR headsets (Ibrahim, 2023). By doing so, it provides an immersive learning experience that can deepen visitor engagement and enhance understanding of historical contexts. The AR guide can include features like 360° virtual tours, animated timelines, and voice-over narrations that bring the history of each monument to life. Such technology offers a cost-effective alternative to physical exhibits and guided tours, particularly in environments where resources for extensive museum displays are limited (Chinwe, 2024). Additionally, the interactive nature of AR can accommodate diverse learning styles, making it an ideal educational tool for both local students and tourists. Recent research indicates that AR applications in cultural heritage significantly boost visitor satisfaction and retention of historical knowledge (Afolabi, 2025). This study intends to design and implement an AR-based guide that not only augments the physical experience of historical monuments but also supports local cultural preservation efforts. By integrating user-friendly interfaces and robust data management systems, the project seeks to provide a seamless, engaging experience that enhances both educational and tourism outcomes in Abuja.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the rich historical heritage of Abuja’s monuments, traditional methods of presenting historical information often fail to engage modern audiences. Many visitors rely on static information boards and guided tours that do not provide the depth or interactivity required to fully appreciate the historical context. This limitation results in a diminished visitor experience and a reduced understanding of the cultural significance of these monuments (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, there is a growing need to preserve and promote historical knowledge using innovative technologies that can reach a broader audience. However, existing digital initiatives are often fragmented or lack the integration necessary to provide a comprehensive, immersive experience. The absence of an AR-based historical guide means that both local and international tourists miss the opportunity to interact with digital narratives that can enhance their understanding of history. Additionally, technical challenges such as limited connectivity, outdated mobile platforms, and insufficient user training further impede the effective deployment of AR solutions. This study seeks to address these issues by implementing an AR-based guide that offers real-time, interactive content to visitors at historical monuments. The research will evaluate the guide’s impact on visitor engagement and educational outcomes, identify technical challenges encountered during implementation, and propose strategies to overcome these obstacles, ensuring the system is both scalable and sustainable (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study
• To design and develop an AR-based historical monument guide for Abuja.
• To evaluate its impact on visitor engagement and historical knowledge retention.
• To identify technical challenges and propose solutions for effective implementation.

Research Questions
• How does AR enhance the presentation of historical monument information?
• What improvements in visitor engagement and knowledge retention are observed?
• What technical and operational challenges affect AR implementation?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it demonstrates how AR technology can transform cultural heritage tourism by creating immersive, interactive experiences that enhance historical understanding (Ibrahim, 2023). The findings will guide cultural institutions and policymakers in Abuja on best practices for integrating AR into heritage sites, thereby enriching visitor experiences and promoting local history.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of an AR-based historical monument guide in Abuja, FCT. It focuses solely on AR integration and does not extend to other digital tourism technologies.

Definitions of Terms
